Republicans - Bad for unemployment - Percent Unemployment by Year
Sometimes averages just don’t tell the story.  In this chart, the blue segments indicate unemployment during Democratic administrations, red segments during Republican administrations.  Heavy horizontal lines are the average during an administration.  Averages for Clinton and Bush II (through 2007) are not too diferent.  But - look at the trends!  This is what makes separating the overall line into Dem and Rep segments such a powerful tool. Also, since over 2 million jobs were lost in 2008, the final story on Bush II will look much worse.
With Republicans, unemployment goes high and stays high.  With Democrats unemployment always declines.
The horizontal purple line is the average of 5.59% over the 60-year data set: 1948 to 2007.
